Stone Pier inside view. Lancaster PA.

On this stone masonry project we have the inside view of the stone pier. The goal for this renovation project was to convert this space of a barn into a two car garage. This pier was the first step in that process. To the left of the pier is where the first garage door opening will be. So, on the left side of the pier there is a 2 x 6 channel cut into the stone. That channel is where a 2 x 6 piece of lumber can be installed for the garage door. Now that the pier is in place all of the lumber and the exhisting stone wall to the left of the pier can be removed.

At the base of the pier on the right side is a large stone tread. This is where a man door will be located. To the right of the man door behind the piece of OSB Is a short wall that is about waste high. I should have moved the piece of OSB before I took this picture so the wall was visible. You can see the short wall from the exterior view. Anyway before the short wall was built the wall it ties into was toothed out so the was no long vertical joint. It is important that the stone overlap or “tie in” in order to prevent cracks. The wall is topped off with one large stone. This pier still needs to be pointed. It will be pointed with an off white custom color since the owner was not satisfied with any of the standard colors available. Finally the finish floor height will be roughly at the bed joint of the large tred stone situated in the man door opening. If you are not familiare with the term “bed Joint” that means the horizontal mortar joint at the bottom of the large tread stone. The plan for the floor is to be a heated concrete floor.

This stone masonry job is located in northern Lancaster county P.A.
