Stone Garden wall the Courtyard. Lebanon PA.

This stone masonry project has kind of an interisting story. In this photo we have a stone wall that is the main entrance to a courtyard dining area at a popular resturant. The stone that were used to build this wall were sourced from three different locations. The base of the wall or first three courses of stone were sourced from a wall at another location. I’m not exactly sure where the owner aquired them from. The top half of the wall with all the highly detailed stone pieces came from a seperate location. That wall was located at a farm along the road in Quentin In Lebanon county.

It’s my belief that due to how some of the detailed pieces were layed in that wall that it was the second wall they were placed in. In other words the origional wall they were made to be in was taken down and they were moved to be used in the wall in Quentin. Then that wall was taken apart and moved again to where I used them to build this wall. My reasoning for this is as I was taking some of the large chunks of wall apart. They were layed so that some of the detailed side’s of the pieces were facing the inside of the wall and the back of the stone would have been visible. Now if you were going to take the time and tremendous expense it would have taken to have those pieces made. You certainly would not make the back side of the stone facing out. That leads me to believe that this wall is the third wall they were layed in. I can see why you would want to reuse them over and over. You would need some pretty deep pockets to have them made these days.

The top half of the wall starts with the curb looking pieces of stone that create the step back. These pieces as they are used in this wall are known as a water table. Then on top of them we have the large blocks of stone with channels cut into them to create the look of a bunch of small square pieces with a long slab on top of them. Finally to top the wall out is a course of triangular shaped stone that I call “points”. At every corner of the wall is a stone pier. The piers in the long wall in the foreground were reassembled the same way we got them. The shorter pier at the end of the wing wall was built with stone that used to be a walk way. Situated in the center of the short wing wall is a large sculpted stone that appears depict a flower of some kind.

So, this is the end result of combining two seperate wall’s and a walk way into one. The type of stone that were used in this wall are a reddish sandstone and the wall is pointed with an off white mortar joint. This stone masonry job is located at a popular resturant in Campbelltown / Palmyra in Lebanon county
