Indiana limestone Petal Panel.
These Petal panels consist of a reinforced concrete base. The concrete base has a metal hook protruding from one side to enable a skid loader or other piece of heavy equipment to pick them up, without damaging them. Due to how heavy they are. The indiana limestone was locally sourced from someone that was using them as a walk way or sidewalk. When we got them they were almost completely black from years of foot traffic. Fortunatly after multiple attempts to pressure wash them, they came clean. Also, there were not enough of them to complete the panels. They were originally about 3 inches thick, so we sent them off to a company that had enormous band saws to be split in half. Thus giving us all the pieces that we needed to complete the panels. Now you may ask yourself “Why go through all that trouble to clean and saw those pieces, why not just get new one’s ?”. Well, to get new one’s they have to be shipped all the way from Indiana. That would make them very expensive just for shipping costs. So, cleaning and slicing was the most cost effective option for this customer.
The purple / maroon colored “Petals” were made from sandstone sourced from the owners property. Most of the sandstone on the property were a red or brown colore. The purple colore was rare for this area, so once the proper colore was located. We had to make sure we had enough to make all the petals from the same block of stone. To ensure there was no colore variation.
After the reinforced concrete base was poured. The first step in assembling them was to lay the petals, Then the indiana limestone pieces were individually scribed to ensure a perfect fit. The petals sit a half inch proud from the indiana limestone creating the desired dimension the customer wanted.
